5-Hydroxytryptophan

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid that the body uses to produce serotonin, an important brain chemical that affects sleep, mood, and appetite (Maffei, 2021). Unlike serotonin, 5-HTP can easily enter the brain from the bloodstream, making it more effective at increasing brain serotonin levels (Sutanto et al., 2024).

Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that 5-HTP supplementation improves sleep quality, particularly reducing sleep latency in older adults for up to 8 weeks (Sutanto et al., 2021; Sutanto et al., 2024). Meta-analyses indicate 5-HTP shows promise for depression treatment with large effect sizes, though placebo-controlled trials remain limited (Javelle et al., 2020).
